There are many businesses offering fine art reproductions and limited edition prints of art and photography, and there is a wide range of quality and longevity being offered under the term giclée. The first use of the term giclée has been credited to Scitex in referring to the fine art prints being printed on their Iris printers. These are still the most common devices for giclée printmaking because until recently, there was nothing else available that could produce equal or better quality. Their main limitations are that they can only print with dye based inks and are limited somewhat in size due to the fact that they can only print on media in sheets. The problem with dye inks is that they don't last. Even special UV stable Iris inks used for fine art fade as quickly as 13 years. There are new inks just coming to market that may give longevity of up to 60 years, but there is significant loss of color gamut. Many printers are not even aware that their prints are temporary at best. Others choose to use inks that they know do not last in order to print brighter, more saturated colors. The problem is, they don't always inform the consumer of this limitation. In fact, there are more and more devices appearing on the market that are capable of very nice image quality, but if the prints fade quickly, what is the point. There are reputable companies offering art reproduction using inks that will fade in as little as a year. Our highest quality reproductions are printed in 6 colors at 1440 dpi at up to 52" widths by any length with pigmented archival inks that have been tested in excess of 120 years. Pigmented inks are the only type of ink that can achieve this type of longevity. At 8 times the resolution of Iris prints, this is the very finest digital reproduction available today and must be seen to be appreciated. We waited to offer giclée reproductions until this technology was available because while you will rarely hear a complaint about Iris image quality, we didn't feel comfortable offering art reproductions that wouldn't last more than 10-25 years. In fact, we do offer a lower cost prints produced with dye inks that last 25-50 years, but we sell it as a service for art posters and prints where this type of longevity is acceptable. Whenever an artist chooses this process for their prints, it is with full knowledge of their options. The bottom line is that artists and photographers shopping for giclée reproduction services should ask to see samples on the media they wish to print on, such as canvas or watercolor paper, to verify that the quality is of an acceptable level, and decide how important longevity is, and what longevity will be received from the printmaker. With this information, the artist can make an intelligent and informed decision, and can have confidence in selling the reproductions to their customers. Digital Arts Imaging offers the highest quality giclée printmaking, fine art reproductions and photographic limited edition prints. Using the latest technology, we can produce stunning reproductions of such quality, that most artists cannot tell that our prints are not originals.
